Mastering is the final pass that makes a song hold up outside your headphones — the same size as everything else in a playlist, and the same balance on a phone, in a car, or on real speakers. AI tools skip it. We measured 20 Suno tracks against 83 commercial releases to find exactly what is missing.
What we measured — 20 Suno tracks vs 83 commercial masters
| Band | AI tracks | Commercial | Gap |
|---|---|---|---|
| lowmid | -8.26 dB | -6.68 dB | -1.6 dB |
| highmid | -9.25 dB | -12.27 dB | +3.0 dB |
| high | -13.67 dB | -18.10 dB | +4.4 dB |
| air | -21.54 dB | -26.58 dB | +5.0 dB |
It sounds smaller than the song before it
Suno delivers around −15 LUFS; commercial releases sit near −9. In a playlist yours comes on quieter and further away. Nobody thinks “this needs mastering” — they just skip.
It gets tiring after a minute
AI tracks run 4–5 dB hot between 6 and 20 kHz. For thirty seconds that reads as detail. After that it is fatigue on earbuds, and people stop before the song ends.
It falls apart on small speakers
The low-mids carrying the kick and the body of a vocal are 1.6 dB thin. On a laptop or phone that range is most of what you hear, so the track goes hollow exactly where it matters.
What actually happens to your file
- 1
Measured
LUFS, true peak, PLR, seven spectral bands, stereo width, high-frequency limit. Takes 1–5 seconds.
- 2
Decided
An AI mastering engineer reads those numbers against curves measured from real commercial masters, then writes the chain.
- 3
Rendered
EQ, saturation, multiband compression, stereo, true-peak limiting. Every stage explained in your report.
- 4
Verified
The result is re-measured. If it misses the target the chain is redesigned, up to three times.
